Very first show of Depeche Mode's 2017 Global Spirit Tour.  Lotta songs I did not know since I'm mainly an 80's/early 90's DM fan.  Not that I dislike music of theirs from the mid-90's to now, I just haven't really listened much so no, I'm not a huge fan of this band but I do like a listen from time to time.  Really nice recording!  Buncha crowd clap-along which (mostly) isn't too terribly annoying to me since the music and vocals really shines through the entire time.  Some light talkers but not close to the mics and always brief.  I'm pretty impressed with this capture.  This is no Lincoln Center music hall type of theater built for sound -- the former Swedbank Arena is actually an indoor (retractable roof) stadium that seats like 60,000 for a concert!  Don't know where the "taper" was sitting but these are great mics used and the sound mix was nearly perfect!  Definitely impressed and totally diggin' it!  Really love the tribute to David Bowie when they played "Heroes."  Dave's voice has still got it, band sounds great!  Givin' this one a good solid 9.5 out of 10 for an A grade!

I'm sorry, this just isn't a great recording.  But it's okay, certainly listenable.  The "taper"'s location was not ideal to get beautiful sound with little crowd noise.  Also, and this is something I oughta learn to fix, the volume is way too low. I'm listening now at FULL volume with my DAP (Digital Audio Player) and I never have to play shows at full volume, I mean for goodness sake, I can hear myself typing and that's never the case when playing other shows.  Ah well.  Lotta talkers, too, (usually) not super close to the mics but you can hear them from time to time.  Maybe that doesn't bother everyone (how could it not?!) but it bugs me.  And in between songs the crowd is definitely louder than the music, not so much you gotta reach for the volume to protect your ears but there's still a noticeable difference.  That's not right.  What do I have good to say about this since I just spent quiet awhile on a lot of negatives?  Willie's a legend.  And the show is short at an hour and fifteen minutes so there's not long wishing it was a pristine recording.  Gotta still gives thanks to the "taper" for trying and then sharing 'cause at 84 what if Willie croaked before his next show and there was no "taper" there that night?  We'd have no recording of his final show and that would be a shame.  I almost don't wanna grade this but it's what I do . . . 8.9 out of 10 (B+) for the very below A grade here at Boot Hill Boots.

Great band!  Great show!  Great recording!  Schoeps mics!  Enough said!  Okay, I'll say the capture here is quite often sounding like a freakin' soundboard!  Again.  You surely have the crowd ambiance and a presumably lesbian fan screaming how much she loves them, but the noise between tracks is never louder than the music.  How important that is to create an excellent audience recording.  I've heard some where as soon as the song is over, people are yelling it up, screaming and clapping super loud right near the taper and you gotta reach for the volume to crank it down until the next song starts.  Not here.  And not with a lot of recordings I've listened to lately.  Some stellar captures that have me in awe.  Some people are all about the soundboard but some auds are just fantastic y éste es otro!  9.7 out of 10.  Grab it, play it LOUD!

Yet another excellent audience recording.  Music and vocals both shine through with next to no crowd distraction whatsoever.  Just fantastic!  My gripe: old Bob is keeping basically the same setlist all tour which to me is boring.  People probably wouldn't have seen the Grateful Dead 500 times if they played the same setlist every tour.  U2 adds a few different songs in from the previous night.  So does Springsteen.  Pearl Jam the same.  Bob used to.  But he's 75.  It's just easier for him nowadays, I guess.  The answer, my friend is: there just isn't a need to listen to every show of a tour anymore for those rare gems he might play.  Find one good quality recording and you're set.  Or two good ones as this is fairly identical to the one I posted  a couple weeks ago from this tour.  This one: about a 9.7 out of 10 for the highest A grade there is before A+.  Some people would even go ahead and give this an A+.  What's keeping me from?  Actually, I'm really tired right now as I type this and I'm not exactly sure what's keeping me from saying A+.  The honor of A+ for an aud is something that just has gotta really really be earned.  Maybe a little too much audience between songs here.  It's not bad at all, really not!  But a quieter audience and no one talking or coughing near the mics would get this to A+.  STILL this is EXCELLENT quality that anyone should be happy with.

Back when I was a wee little tot, maybe a little bigger than we, I had Asia's debut album on vinyl.  Sweeeet!  And when a small carnival came to our town each year, one of the prizes was this like 8 by 5 inch (or something like that) mirror thingy with a band's logo in it.  Had to have the Stones, VH, AC/DC and others including Asia's first big serpent logo... it was a serpent, right?  Anyway, loved their music all those years ago and I wasn't even in high school yet!  Time went on and you'd hear 1 or 2 songs occasionally if you listened to enough classic rock radio.  Same two songs over and over.  Then I started collecting these bootlegs and hey, people taped Asia and today spread some of their shows around.  That's how we got to this posting.  I've grabbed a few and this is actually my very first listen.  Not totally my cup o' tea but it's good live music.  I know I have more shows than I'll probably ever listen to, why fill some of my time with lesser liked stuff?  I dunno.  Part of it has to do with me maybe thinkin' I'm immortal and *will*** have time to listen to it all, so why not something like this once in awhile.  ANYWAY . . . very nice audience recording for the era!!  Great equipment and an optimal location in the theater, plus modern day mastering to bring it to optimal form, gives Asia fans a pretty enjoyable listen compared to an average quality, Sony Walkman recording that, truth be told, as much as you might love the music, isn't always a joy to listen to.  But this one is.  9.7 out of 10, a good, solid A grade no doubt!

Thank you, Schoeps, for making such great microphones for capturing shows so beautifully.  It's not all about the mics, also location of the taper, of course, but dem top o' the line mics sure do help, and DAT, too.  When you've got all three workin' just right for ya, you get a sweet recording like this one.  And I've been reminded that I need to listen to more Foo Fighters shows cuz Dave Grohl's one of the best at interacting with the crowd . . . helps make listening more fun such as in this one.  I'm not sure there's two songs without him bantering in between (or at least saying what song they're about to play.)  I also find it somewhat odd that he kinda mimics an effeminate gay man while on stage in San Francisco.  To me that's making fun of them but maybe he's not.  What do I know, I've never even tried out for Jeopardy, at least not yet.  Anyway, great show, great recording, the house sound in The Warfield was superb and the Schoeps picks it up so well.  9.6 out of 10 for a solid A grade capture.

Sounds like a soundboard . . . most of the time. When there's no one screaming, when there's no semi-nearby conversation (6 or 7 times, quiet and brief,) when there's no moron screaming for Bobby (thru much of one song,) this sounds simply awesome.  There are a dozen or so minor sound fluctuations that are so short before it bounces right back to where it was and a half dozen pops throughout the whole show (all quick and quiet,) and David Kemper's bass drum causes noticeable distortion on several songs, but when it's good it's REALLY GOOD!!!  This is purely an A+ recording for a good 85% of it! The crowd distractions really aren't that bad and honestly didn't take away from my enjoying the show over two listens.  This coulda been one of the best audience recordings of the Dylan year but I gotta knock it down a small bit because of people's mouth's and the recording levels not able to take that full bass drum.  Still it's gotta earn a 9.7 for a high A grade!

Speaking of David Kemper, I wonder if he thinks of his dear friend Jerry Garcia when Friend Of The Devil gets played by Bob.  David was the drummer for Jerry's non-Grateful Dead projects for Jerry's last 11 years playin', from about 1984 to 95.  I so do love hearing Bob playing Jerry since Jerry played Bob for . . . well, for just about ever!

Pretty darn fine recording . . . except the vocals are halfway buried most of the time.  Perhaps that's the taper's fault for not being in an optimal location to pick up the perfect sound as it should be heard, or perhaps maybe some fault of the sound guys who did a terrible job mixing?  Who knows.  Vocals aside, this is an exceptional recording.  You can hear crowd stuff now and then but shouldn't ever really be distracting, wasn't to me.  Guitar and drums are loud and clear!  The bass might also be a bit buried.  This had so much potential to be an A+ recording.  Still it's a good listen!  I'm goin' with about a 9.6 out of 10 for a solid A grade.

Ahh, the original Napoleon Dynamite!  Fun, fun show from a dude who loves having fun!  Not just a musician and singer but a comedian, as well.  My first thought about this show was why in an ice rink?  It's really not terrible sound for the type of room it is . . . the awesomeness of the taping setup really helps here -- the taper came to get a good capture and he did!  Crowd noise is minimal and Elvis's vocals and instruments are well heard throughout.  It's not without flaws as the last song cuts off abruptly.  Woulda been nice to hear the Professor say goodnight to enthusiastic college crowd. There's also some static here and there, a little change in quality a time or two but each time so brief and the sound immediately comes right back to beautiful.  But why, oh why, in an ice rink and not a nice performing arts center type of hall or theater made for great acoustics?  Ah well, such was the 80's, a great time with tons of crappy recordings but this one is kinda close to an A+!  I'm goin' about a 9.6 for a strong A grade.  I was worried about quality but this is excellent!  "Let's hear it for New Jersey!!!"

Pretty good recording.  Not every instrument is crystal clear in the mix but then again, this is kind of a grungy Neil sound and so everything blending together just almost feels right.  One gripe might be the vocals are not that up front all the time.  Crowd noise between songs isn't too bad, not to the point you have to reach for the volume as that's one thing that can really spoil a great audience recording, even if the music is loud and clear, the between song crowd noise can be so bad but not too much here.  This is really pretty nice and I'm inclined to go to about an A grade, I think a 9.3 out of 10 for an audience recording.

That lineage for this show looks ludicrous to me but the sound quality is exceptional!  I do believe this was broadcast on television in Deutschland and is available in (bootleg) DVD form although I really don't think this audio is derived from that video, seems like if it was it would have more crowd noise typical of a television broadcast but maybe they do things differently in Europe than in the U.S. where they feel the need to pipe in crowd noise to make the viewer feel like he is there.  In any case, after that run-on sentence, the soundboard here is crisp and beautiful and do I even wanna dare say it's a 10 out of 10 for the perfect A+? Man, it sure does feel like that!  My only gripe is the first song starts off so fast without any crowd noise fade in or introduction of any kind.  And it seems like such a strange opener for Tom but from there on out it feels like a great Petty show.  I know this has been posted for sure by others before but here it is again for anyone who does not have it.  Definitely a top quality recording, maybe one of the best I'll ever post!

Apparently there is at least one other source of this show, more complete by filling in a few songs.  Seems there might be two other sources.  Now usually I despise incomplete shows.  Hate 'em.  But mayhaps my stance on them is changing a little cuz I'm not really minding listening to this.  The King Biscuit Flower Hour showed up at this show and recorded it for posterity . . . not like there's a lack of EC soundboards from the 80's but anyway, they featured this show on their program but had to cut out some songs and cram in a few commercials for the hour long time slot.  I loved these when I was younger and listened to the radio before I ever knew about owning a bootleg concert recording in its entirety.  But even though the K.B.F.H. mixes in a little bit of unnecessary audience noise, I'm still diggin' this one.  9.8 out of 10.

A short but sweet set by DMB kicks off the evening and what a fantastic recording that is, essentially CD-quality!  It's not perfect, unfortunately, as there is a high pitched whine through the first several tracks (I think it goes away) that can be heard when the music is low/between songs.  When the music is kickin', the whine can't even be heard.  If that issue didn't exist it would be a 10 out of 10!  It's really not too bad and didn't distract me terribly.

Quality for the Phish show is definitely above average, especially for 1994, really an excellent audience recording.  Why is one soundboard and one an audience?  DMB was cool like that in 1994 while Phish . . . I dunno how many '94 SBDs there are but maybe it wasn't as common for them that year as their popularity had definitely picked up by this point and there isn't a known soundboard for this show.   Soundboards not always needed, though, as this is almost an A+ for auds -- I'll go about a 9.6/10.

For the encore, I ditched the audience sourced Phish tracks and tacked on a Soundboard finish courtesy of the Dave Matthews Band recording.  Because the finale includes DMB members, I guess it got recorded . . . although how would they know ahead of time???  Perhaps the whole Phish show got recorded from the soundboard?  In any case, the finale did and it was included with the DMB files so here it is.  Well worth changing from aud to sbd for those like 22 minutes, I think it is.  A most excellent end to the night.

Very nice audience recording, well taken care of through the years and expertly converted for digital listening.  It does have one major flaw, unfortunately -- there's a tape flip during Station To Station and the sound quality isn't as great for the three-song encore.  Kind of disappointing but but you probably won't ever get a better copy and for the whole tour this might be one of the best audience recordings there is, at least overall.  It is what it is and most of the show can be incredibly enjoyed.  Seems like perhaps the vocals are a little distant sounding at first but they also seem to improve as the show goes on.  Energetic and sounding great, this is a very good '78 listen for Bowie!  Up through the tape flip flaw, I give this about a . . . maybe a 9.4 out 10 for a good solid A grade.
